This was the most darling fairytale town we passed through on our first day. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a well-preserved medieval town in Germany, known for its cobblestone streets, timber-framed houses, and picturesque town walls. Its enchanting atmosphere attracts history lovers and travelers wanting to experience old-world Europe. We spent the day walking the streets, browsing the shops and touring the medieval museums.

We made our way to Nuremburg where we stayed in the heart within the ancient walls for a few days. Nuremberg’s Old Town is a captivating journey through medieval Germany. Wander along cobblestone streets lined with half-timbered houses, historic fountains, and charming squares like Hauptmarkt, home to the iconic Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain). Explore the towering Nuremberg Castle, which offers panoramic views over the city’s red-tiled roofs, and don’t miss the vibrant local shops, cafes, and artisan boutiques tucked into every corner. For a thought-provoking contrast, the nearby Nuremberg Trials Memorial and Documentation Center offers insight into the post‑World War II trials of Nazi leaders, providing a deep and meaningful historical experience alongside the city’s medieval charm.

After a few days in Nuremburg, we had to pass through Regensburg on our way to Munich. I had to! It's my namesake. A stop in Regensburg is like stepping back in time. This UNESCO World Heritage city is known for its well-preserved medieval Old Town, complete with winding cobblestone streets, historic patrician houses, and the stunning Stone Bridge over the Danube. Visit Regensburg Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, and explore charming squares filled with cafes, shops, and local markets. After a few hours strolling this beautiful city, we hopped back on the Autobahn.

Munich was probably my favorite city in Germany. Beautiful cathedrals, elegant squares with lots of WWII history, and great dining options. As the vibrant capital of Bavaria, it perfectly blends history, culture, and modern life. We explored the Marienplatz with its iconic New Town Hall and glockenspiel, strolled through the historic Old Town, and admired architectural gems like Frauenkirche. We took the train one day to Dacau, a concentration camp from WWII - a truly sobering experience. The entrance is pictured here.

After a few days in Munich, our intention was to spend a night in Fussen to see the Neuschwanstein castle. Learn from me, folks, get your tickets well in advance. They were sold out the say we arrived and when we made a plan to go the next morning at 9am, they were already sold out. This image was as close to the castle as we we able to get. We still enjoyed our time in another quaint Bavarian town for a couple of days. Even though it was rainy (hey this is a German summer), we still enjoyed our time in Germany before heading on to Austria.
